Bhadohi(Uttar Pradesh): A man from the Dalit community in Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh has been left blind following a violent assault, police and local residents said. The incident has sparked outrage among local communities and drawn attention to ongoing concerns about caste-based violence in the region.
The victim, identified as a resident of a village in the district, was attacked by a group of men late last week. According to accounts from villagers, the assailants confronted him allegedly over a personal dispute that later escalated into violence. During the attack, he was severely beaten and suffered injuries that resulted in the loss of sight in both eyes.
Police reached the scene after locals alerted them and took the injured man to a nearby hospital for treatment. Medical officials said he had sustained serious trauma to his eyes and face, and efforts are being made to stabilise his condition and begin necessary care.
Local community leaders said they were shocked by the brutality of the assault. Residents added that the victim’s family members have been traumatised and are demanding swift action against those responsible for the attack.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that a case has been registered, and several suspects are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. The police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest others believed to be involved in the incident.
The attack has stirred reactions on social media and among civil society groups, with many calling for justice and stricter action against violence rooted in caste discrimination. Activists have urged authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and support for the victim’s family.
Officials from the district administration said they are monitoring the investigation closely and have asked law enforcement to take all necessary steps to bring the perpetrators to justice. They also appealed for peace in the area and asked residents not to resort to violence in response.
The victim’s family continues to care for him at the hospital, where he remains under observation. Community members said they are organising support for his medical needs and are hopeful that authorities will act quickly to address the case.
