Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons and one of India’s most respected industrialists, has passed away at the age of 86. The chairman emeritus of Tata Sons had earlier addressed rumors about his health, sharing that he was undergoing routine medical checks due to his age. However, on Wednesday night, N Chandrasekaran, current Chairman of Tata Sons, confirmed the news of Tata’s death, expressing deep sorrow and highlighting his immense contributions to both the Tata Group and India.
“It is with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, a truly uncommon leader whose immeasurable contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the very fabric of our nation,” said Mr. Chandrasekaran. He described Tata as more than just a leader, calling him a mentor, guide, and friend who led by example. Under Tata’s stewardship, the Tata Group expanded globally while remaining committed to its ethical principles.
Chandrasekaran also reflected on Tata’s philanthropic work, emphasizing his impact on education, healthcare, and other social initiatives that will benefit future generations.
As news of Tata’s passing spread, tributes poured in from across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the tributes, describing Tata as “a compassionate soul and an extraordinary human being.” Modi lauded Tata for his stable leadership of one of India’s most prestigious business houses and for his humility and dedication to improving society.
Rahul Gandhi praised Tata’s vision and lasting contributions to both business and philanthropy. Gautam Adani hailed Tata as a “giant” and a “visionary” who redefined modern India, stating that “legends like him never fade away.” Anand Mahindra, deeply affected by Tata’s death, remarked on Tata’s influence in shaping India’s economic progress, saying his guidance at this moment would have been invaluable. Mahindra described Tata as a businessman who saw financial success as a tool for the greater good of the global community.
Mukesh Ambani expressed grief at the loss of not just a business leader but also a dear friend, calling it a sad day for India and Indian industry. He praised Tata’s noble character and human values, noting that his interactions with Tata always deepened his respect for him.
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, founder of Biocon Limited, also shared her memories of Tata, posting a heartfelt tribute on social media.
