KERRVILLE – At least 82 people have died as a result of the flash floods that hit central Texas, and families are now combing through the destruction that remains. The floods, which hit on Friday, swept away houses and inflicted massive damage, especially at Camp Mystic, a girls’ summer camp.

Rescue efforts are still underway, with the authorities confirming that there are still 41 people unaccounted for throughout the state, 10 of them girls and a camp counselor. 68 bodies have been recovered in Kerr County alone, among them 28 children, confirmed Sheriff Larry Leitha. The situation is still critical, with the fatalities rising as rescue efforts are still ongoing.

Governor Greg Abbott has issued a state of emergency and issued warnings of more heavy rainfalls which would worsen the flood situation. Emergency messages have been sent out, which ask people to move away from areas that are prone to further flooding. The governor stressed that everyone needs prayers and assistance for the victims of this tragedy.

President Donald Trump has issued a major disaster declaration for Kerr County, triggering the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help with recovery. Trump offered his condolences, saying, “It’s a horrible thing that took place, absolutely horrible.”

The flooding, where the water level increased 26 feet in a mere 45 minutes, surprised many residents and campers, even though the National Weather Service gave forecasts in advance. While searchers use helicopters, boats, and drones to find victims, residents are trying to understand the impact of this devastating incident.
