Karur, Tamil Nadu — The death toll from Saturday evening’s stampede at actor-politician Vijay’s campaign rally has climbed to 41 after a 65-year-old woman, critically injured in the crush, succumbed in hospital. The tragedy occurred in Veluswamypuram, along the Karur–Erode highway, where thousands had gathered to hear Vijay speak.
The woman, identified as Sukuna of Velusamipuram, had been admitted to the Karur Government Hospital’s intensive care unit but was unable to recover. With her passing, officials confirmed the death count has now reached 41.
What Happened
Witnesses say the rally site became dangerously overcrowded. As Vijay’s vehicle moved, the crowd surged forward, triggering panic. Many slipped and fell, especially in narrow exit lanes, and were trampled in the ensuing chaos. Reports also mention a brief power disruption during the rally, which may have aggravated the panic.
At least 80 people are being treated in various hospitals. Some are in critical condition. State and central leaders have announced financial compensation: ₹10 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹1 lakh to those injured. Vijay, deeply shaken by the incident, pledged ₹20 lakh to each bereaved family and ₹2 lakh to those hospitalized.
Government and Investigation
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has flown in to oversee relief efforts, assuring full support to victims’ families. A judicial inquiry has been ordered, to be led by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan, aimed at investigating lapses in crowd management and public safety arrangements. The Opposition has questioned whether police and intelligence had underestimated turnout and failed to ensure adequate safety protocols.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu expressed deep sorrow, offering condolences and assuring that help would arrive swiftly.
The Aftermath
The tragedy has once again spotlighted flaws in crowd control practices at large political gatherings. Overcrowded spaces, inadequate emergency exits, and insufficient coordination appear to have contributed to the disaster. Many are calling for stricter norms and tougher accountability to prevent such losses in the future.
As the investigation moves ahead, families grieve, survivors heal, and Tamil Nadu braces for questions about how a political rally could turn deadly so quickly.
