Red Fort Blast: Initial Probe Points to Accidental Explosion

Red Fort Blast Initial Probe Points to Accidental Explosion - Citizen News Daily

New Delhi, November 12, 2025 — A powerful explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort metro station sent shockwaves through the capital on Monday evening, leaving multiple vehicles charred and at least three people dead. Initial investigation reports suggest that the blast may have been caused by an accidental detonation of explosives being transported in a private vehicle.

According to officials involved in the probe, a white Hyundai i20 was carrying an improvised explosive device (IED) when it exploded near Netaji Subhash Marg. Early forensic examinations indicate that the device was poorly assembled, leading to a premature detonation. The incident occurred at a busy intersection, but quick action by bystanders and emergency teams helped prevent a larger tragedy.

Early Investigation Findings

Sources in law enforcement revealed that the prime suspect — believed to have links to a terror module — may have been moving the explosive device when it accidentally went off. The blast caused severe damage to surrounding vehicles but did not result in a major crater, which officials say points to a low-grade or unstable explosive material.

CCTV footage from nearby cameras shows the car slowing down moments before the explosion. Investigators believe the detonator could have been triggered by a short circuit or mishandling inside the vehicle.

Panic and Response

Eyewitnesses described a loud explosion followed by a plume of smoke that engulfed the area. Several commuters were seen rushing to help the injured as fire tenders and police arrived within minutes.

Authorities cordoned off the area and launched a detailed forensic investigation. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Delhi Police’s special cell are jointly handling the case.

Administration on Alert

Security has been tightened across Delhi, with particular focus on major metro stations, religious sites, and government offices. Officials are also reviewing CCTV footage and phone records to trace any larger network behind the incident.

An officer involved in the investigation stated, “All angles — including terrorism and accidental mishandling — are being examined. Nothing can be ruled out at this stage.”

The Bigger Question

The Red Fort blast has raised serious concerns about how such a vehicle carrying explosives managed to enter a high-security area. Authorities are now assessing possible lapses in surveillance and patrolling in Old Delhi.

While the investigation continues, the tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the constant vigilance needed to keep public spaces safe in the national capital.
