Centre Calls Crucial Meeting with MPs to Discuss Waqf Bill - Citizen News Daily

The central government has called a high-level meeting with all Members of Parliament (MPs) today to deliberate on the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The meeting comes amid growing opposition from various political parties and community leaders who have raised concerns over the bill’s impact on Waqf properties and minority rights.

According to sources, the discussion will focus on key amendments proposed in the bill, which aims to introduce reforms in the management and governance of Waqf properties across India. The government is expected to address concerns regarding land ownership, administrative control, and transparency in the functioning of Waqf boards.

Opposition parties, including the Congress, AIMIM, and Trinamool Congress, have strongly opposed the bill, calling it an attempt to weaken Waqf institutions. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has repeatedly demanded a rollback, arguing that the proposed changes undermine the rights of the Muslim community over their religious and charitable endowments.

On the other hand, the ruling BJP maintains that the bill is aimed at bringing transparency and accountability in the administration of Waqf properties. Senior government officials have hinted that today’s meeting is an attempt to build consensus before the bill is tabled for final discussion in Parliament.

The bill has sparked protests in several states, with religious organizations and activists urging MPs to reject any provisions that dilute the historical and legal status of Waqf properties. Legal experts and scholars have also raised questions about the constitutional validity of some amendments, arguing that they could lead to prolonged legal battles.

As the meeting unfolds, political observers believe that the Centre’s approach today will determine whether the bill moves forward smoothly or faces further resistance in the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament.
