He earned his doctorate in economics from Oxford University and held various key positions, including Chief Economic Advisor, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and Finance Minister.

As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996, Singh was instrumental in implementing economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy, steering the country towards significant growth. He served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, during which India experienced substantial economic expansion and strengthened international relations, notably through the landmark US-India nuclear deal.
