Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir — In a devastating escalation of violence, at least 26 tourists were killed and dozens more injured in a terror attack at Baisaran meadow near the popular hill station of Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday. The assault, carried out by four gunmen, marks one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in the region in recent years.

The assailants opened fire indiscriminately on tourists who were visiting the scenic meadow, which is accessible only on foot or by pony. Most of the victims were Indian nationals. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but authorities suspect militants opposing Indian rule are behind the massacre.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi cut short his official visit to Saudi Arabia and returned to New Delhi early Wednesday. He condemned the attack, stating, “The perpetrators of this heinous act will not be spared.” Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Srinagar to assess the situation and convened a high-level security meeting.

Eyewitnesses recounted harrowing scenes of chaos and panic. One survivor, Pallavi, whose husband was killed in the attack, reported that the gunmen spared her and her son, instructing them to “go tell this to Modi,” before fleeing the scene.

International leaders have expressed solidarity with India. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conveyed condolences and affirmed support in combating terrorism.

This attack underscores the persistent volatility in the region, despite efforts to promote tourism and stability. The incident has prompted heightened security measures and a renewed focus on counter-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
