As of January 7, 2025, seven cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been reported across India, with instances in Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra.
Case Distribution:
Karnataka: Two cases in Bengaluru involving infants aged three and eight months. The younger infant has been discharged, while the older remains under treatment.
Gujarat: A two-month-old in Ahmedabad tested positive for HMPV.
Tamil Nadu: Two cases reported in Chennai and Salem districts.
Maharashtra: Two children, aged seven and thirteen, in Nagpur were diagnosed with HMPV; both have recovered following outpatient care.
Government Response:
The Union Health Ministry emphasizes that there is no surge in respiratory illnesses nationwide and maintains robust surveillance to detect such cases. States have been advised to enhance public awareness regarding preventive measures and to review surveillance for influenza-like illnesses (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI).
Expert Insights:
Dr. Raman Gangakhedkar, former ICMR scientist, notes that HMPV is generally not deadly, with most infections presenting mild symptoms similar to the common cold, lasting four to five days. He highlights that severe cases are rare and typically occur in children under five and adults over 65.
About HMPV:
Human Metapneumovirus is a respiratory virus causing symptoms akin to the common cold, such as cough, nasal congestion, and fever. While it can lead to severe respiratory issues in young children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals, most cases are mild and self-limiting.
Preventive Measures:
Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and water.
Respiratory Etiquette: Covering mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
Avoidance: Staying away from crowded places if symptomatic.
The Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and advises the public to remain vigilant but not alarmed.
