New Delhi, November 28, 2024 – The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) examining the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, will move a motion in the Lok Sabha on Thursday to extend its tenure until the last day of the Budget Session, 2025.
Despite a 500-page draft report already prepared by Chairman Jagdambika Pal, members agree that further deliberations are necessary due to the bill’s sensitive nature. Heated debates have slowed the process, with opposition leaders raising concerns.
The government had tabled the bill on August 8, aiming to reform the regulation of Waqf properties. However, it has faced strong opposition and internal disagreements within the JPC. The committee includes 13 opposition members and is tasked with reporting by early 2025.
