Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sparked controversy by referring to the Waqf Board as “land mafias” during an event in Prayagraj amid ongoing preparations for the 2025 Maha Kumbh. The Chief Minister’s remarks have drawn sharp criticism from various quarters, including opposition parties and community leaders.
Adityanath, while addressing the gathering, alleged that the Waqf Board had illegally encroached upon large tracts of land across the state. He emphasized the need for strict action against illegal land grabs and assured that his government would take necessary steps to reclaim encroached properties. “No one will be allowed to grab government land or use it for personal gains under the guise of religion,” he stated.
His comments come at a time when the administration is working on large-scale infrastructure and security arrangements for the Maha Kumbh, which is expected to attract millions of pilgrims from across the world. Adityanath reiterated his government’s commitment to ensuring a grand and peaceful Maha Kumbh and warned against any elements that may disrupt the preparations.
In response, leaders from various minority organizations condemned the Chief Minister’s statement, accusing him of trying to polarize sentiments ahead of the event. Some political leaders have urged Adityanath to refrain from making inflammatory remarks and instead focus on inclusive governance.
The Waqf Board, a statutory body responsible for the administration of Waqf properties, has also rejected the allegations. A board spokesperson stated that they are willing to cooperate with any legal inquiries but condemned the use of derogatory language. They further clarified that all properties under their jurisdiction are properly documented and managed according to the law.
As the controversy grows, experts believe that such remarks could impact communal harmony in the state. Several political analysts have pointed out that the Chief Minister’s remarks might be aimed at consolidating a specific voter base ahead of upcoming elections.
The Maha Kumbh preparations are in full swing, with the state government allocating significant resources for infrastructure development, transportation, sanitation, and security. Authorities have also ramped up efforts to ensure that the event remains free from any disruptions or controversies.
